Chapter 3: With This Kidney, I Thee Wed

Herb first fell in love with Michelle’s musical talents.  He was attracted by her singing voice and humility, not to mention her taste in music.  Not many women had heard of, let alone liked, some of the music he enjoyed.  Michelle wasn’t like other women on campus.  She paid attention to him and was not afraid to correct his misjudgments. This honesty and Godly conviction made her even more irresistible to him as a candidate for wife.  Combined with her beauty, it was a sealed deal. Michelle was Herb’s best friend and he wanted to keep it that way forever!

Michelle loved Herb for the man of God that he was, and was seeking to become.  He was open and honest about his faith, and he was someone she could grow with spiritually.  He had a great sense of humor and she appreciated his loyalty and thoughtfulness.  He was willing to watch romantic comedies, and could talk about “All things male and female,” as he once said.  He loved learning and was incredibly intelligent.  He never got extremely upset or excited, but rather, his attitude and emotions were steady and consistent, like the beat of the drum she watched him play many times from across the auditorium.  Herb provided a steadfastness and balance in Michelle’s life that she did not even realize she desperately needed.

As they planned their future – college graduation, a fairy tale wedding, and a lifetime of happiness – tragedy struck.  Herb’s body rejected his transplanted kidney and he began dialysis.  This was God’s chance to perform another miracle!  In December 2005, just six months before graduation and their wedding, Herb received a new kidney from Michelle.  They were a perfect match – in more than one way!  The surgery was a raving success, they were both given a clean bill of health, went on to graduate in May, and have their dream wedding in June.  The stress of the of the year was far overshadowed by the joy of truly becoming one.
